> Second, from 'how much more so the essence' onward, the analogy with the four chapters. As clarified above, the twenty subtleties are all explaining the name while encompassing the essence and so forth, because explaining the name is the general and the \[other\] three chapters are the particular, and the general combines the particulars; designating within the ten subtleties the object is the essence; wisdom, practice, stages, and dharmas are the substance; and response and the other three subtleties are the function. Since the responsive \[connection\] and retinue obtain benefit, this necessarily unites from cause to effect, returning to produce the function of benefiting others, which also possesses essence and so forth; hence it says, 'simply the dharmas of self and other, cause and effect.' Moreover, the four chapters—name and so forth—are all dharmas to be received by those below, which belongs to the teaching; yet one must distinguish their coarse and subtle through their characteristics. The present four chapters transcend the previous three teachings and four periods, and furthermore are capable of opening the previous ones to make them all perfectly subtle; hence the word 'eternally distinct' encompasses \[the subtleties of\] comparison and absolute, because only the present sutra can universally open \[them\].
