> Second, the passage beginning 'Why?' explains the names and meanings of the gates. The three thousand realms of principle and phenomena are fundamentally fused and identical; but before the capacities for the real have ripened, expedient transformation should be employed. The Buddha had to speak by dividing them in accord with the sentiments of beings; hence it is said, 'nondual yet dual,' so that the half and full dharmas temporarily have differences. Once the expedient transformation is accomplished, the real principle must be revealed, and the Buddha spoke by opening and harmonizing them according to his own intent; hence it is said, 'dual yet nondual.' The ten dharmas beginning with the realm are precisely what is opened; since they are judged and then opened in terms of the teachings and divisions of the canon, they are all perfect and all wondrous, and so the gate that actively opens should properly be named 'nondual.'
