問：「他云，舊本作藉知曰修，而以本性靈知用釋知字。若云藉智起修者，蓋寫者書曰逼知，後人認作智字，既不成句，又見下句有起修之言，遂輒加起字爾。此復云何？」

> Question: "Others say that older editions read 'relying on knowing is called cultivation' (jie zhi yue xiu), and use the numinous knowing of the fundamental nature to interpret the word 'knowing' (zhi). If one says 'relying on wisdom gives rise to cultivation' (jie zhi qi xiu), this is merely because a copyist wrote 'yue' (曰) too close to 'zhi' (知), and later people mistook it for the character 'wisdom' (zhi 智); since that did not form a complete sentence, and seeing the phrase 'give rise to cultivation' (qi xiu) in the following line, they arbitrarily added the character 'give rise' (qi 起). How should this be resolved?"
