> Second, explaining pure conduct (brahmacaryā): this is conditionless kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. With the mind of the great nirvāṇa, the bodhisattva cultivates noble conduct and attains the stage of fearlessness, possessing the vast, unhindered operations of the twenty-five samādhis. At that time, this kindness and compassion constitute true pure conduct, not that cultivated by other Brahmā heavens; nor are these four immeasurable minds the kindness and compassion oriented toward beings or dharmas of the Tripiṭaka teaching, the shared teaching, and the like. At that time, the bodhisattva uses this conditionless and thoughtless kindness and compassion to perfume and cultivate sentient beings, leaving no practice unaccomplished; this pure conduct is itself all dharmas. Therefore the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Kindness is none other than the Tathāgata; compassion is none other than Buddha-nature.' If kindness does not fully possess the Buddha's ten powers, thirty-two marks, and four fearlessnesses, it is not the Tathāgata's kindness. Therefore, its power of wisdom is vast and profound, capable of being fully adorned with all merits—this is named pure conduct.
