> Next, explaining the non-retrogressing samādhi (avivartya-samādhi) which shatters the existence of animals: animals lack shame and conscience; because they give rise to evil karma, they retrogress and fall away from the good paths; due to views and thoughts they retrogress; due to dust and sand they retrogress; due to ignorance they retrogress. In order to shatter these various retrogressions, the bodhisattva cultivates precepts and patience to shatter the retrogression of evil karma; cultivates concentration to subdue the retrogression of views and thoughts; cultivates the wisdom of arising and ceasing and non-arising to shatter the retrogression of views and thoughts; cultivates the immeasurable wisdom to shatter the retrogression of dust and sand; and cultivates the wisdom of non-action to shatter the retrogression of ignorance. Because views and thoughts are shattered, the samādhi of non-retrogression in stage is completed; because dust and sand are shattered, the samādhi of non-retrogression in practice is completed; because ignorance is shattered, the samādhi of non-retrogression in mindfulness is completed. Personally shattering the three kinds of retrogression through the power of practice, they accomplish the three non-retrogressions, personally attain the samādhis of the three truths, and the power of their compassion invisibly perfuses the dharmadhātu. According to the capacities and resonances of animals, they may take the body of an elephant king, a woodpecker, or a great vulture, taking birth among them according to what is appropriate and manifesting to preach the Dharma to shatter the existence of animals. Being non-retrogressing themselves, they cause others not to retrogress; hence this samādhi is called the 'non-retrogressing samādhi'.
