First, for those who were not yet ripe, it expounded the four teachings again, fully discussing the Buddha-nature and causing them to be equipped with true permanence and enter the great nirvāṇa; hence it is named the teaching of gleaning. Second, for those of dull faculties in the final age who develop nihilistic views regarding the Buddhadharma, thereby cutting short their wisdom-life and losing their Dharma-body, it set forth the three provisionals and supported the one perfect real; hence it is named the teaching of supporting the vinaya and discussing permanence. However, in terms of period and flavor, it is identical with the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. In terms of its division, its purity and mixture differ slightly. Therefore the text says: 'From the Mahāprajñā emerges the Mahānirvāṇa.'
