> Zunshi respectfully addresses Great Master Fazhi. Recently I received your kind letter along with your new commentary, which I read while burning incense. It was as if approaching a discerning mirror; how could my joy and comfort be measured? From summer to autumn, your inferior younger brother has been bedridden with severe illness, scarcely able to sustain myself. Even now, the mass of qi in my abdomen is like carrying a stone; a hundred physicians and a thousand medicines only add to it without curing, which is the severe retribution of past karmic conditions and present actions. I merely await the arrival of death, with nothing more to say. My only regret is that I will not see the face of my good friend before parting forever. I look up thinking that you, my elder brother, will have a great assembly of talented youths gathering at your lecture seat; may you dwell in peace and stability for a long time to widely save this Way. Looking around within the four seas at the single teaching of our Tiantai Mountain school today, there is only you, my elder brother. These are no extravagant words. The Tianzhu Bodhimaṇḍa that your younger brother exerted himself to establish has a very fine location, truly suitable for widespread propagation. Since Dharma Master Zhenguan, there have been dozens of abbots, all virtuous and noble monks who lectured and instructed. Master Guan early on received instruction from the Tiantai Dhyāna Master; he is indeed the one referred to in the \*Guoqing bailu\* when Chen Baizhi recommended the two Dharma Masters Zhenguan and Huipei. That it now serves as a bodhimaṇḍa of Zhizhe is no accident; it is truly inheriting this remaining protection. Its portraits of the Nine Patriarchs are the foremost under heaven. Donors have one after another printed ten thousand fascicles of doctrinal texts. The monastic quarters for housing monks are already sufficient for use, but there are not yet main halls and corridors. As for the scenic excellence of the site, traveling visitors all say it is unmatched under heaven. What is regrettable lies herein. I now wish to invite your worthy disciple Benru to come over and assume the abbotship. Recently, when my illness was severe, I summoned him to meet; the monastery assembly and donors were of one mind and same wish, joyous inside and out, which is also due to past conditions. He has already accepted the minor invitation letter, but he repeatedly says only: 'I have not yet reported to Siming's primary lecturer; otherwise I have no refusal.' Now seeing the official letter from the prefecture bearing seals, he must be urged to accept; at the beginning of winter he will surely come to Siming first to consult you. Moreover, my elder brother has taken the propagation of scriptures as your fundamental intention throughout your life; please take the trouble to urge him to step forth to this bustling crossroad to lecture and preach the great teaching, which will also be a great glorification of our school. This matter is by no means out of selfish bias, nor is there any other scheme in inviting him over. For Dongshan, I must send Zushao to open lectures there; he also seems capable of going, measuring his talent. If the incense of lecturing can remain unbroken in several places, what regret will I have in dying? Your inferior younger brother will surely pass away this winter; I hope to rely on the power of my elder brother's original vow for the Pure Land to allow me to barely attain the lowest grade, where we shall have the chance to meet again. Now I can only wait with tied hands. Recently I acquired a rubbing of the Xiatamin, and have instructed my disciples to send the stone rubbing of 'Song'ai' along with this. Although the single text of 'Song'ai' is a minor craft, it seems helpful for admonishing students; I hope you will glance over it, which would be a great fortune. As for the third fascicle of the new commentary on the \*Contemplation Sūtra\*, please send it quickly, so that I may see it once before dying. After this, I fear news will be scarce. Take care, take care. Zunshi bows and states.
