> If a practitioner is able in this way, during the three periods of seven days, to energetically apply themselves with single-mindedness, when cultivating the samādhi during the three periods of seven days or after having completed the three periods of seven days, there are different signs of verification for three types of practitioners. Now I shall briefly distinguish them: first, the signs of verification for practitioners of lower faculties; second, the signs of verification for practitioners of middling faculties; third, the signs of verification for practitioners of superior faculties. As for the signs of verification for the lower faculties, they mean that during the three periods of seven days or upon their completion, one obtains purification of the faculty of morality. How should one know this? Within this there are also three grades: First, for practitioners of the lower grade, if they obtain various uncanny good dreams, or feel their faculties are clear and pure, the four great elements light and agile, their complexion fresh and clean, their body endowed with vigor and majestic virtue that is lofty and sublime, and their mind set on the Path surging forward with courage—this is called the sign of knowing that the faculty of morality is gradually purified in the lower grade. As for the sign of the purification of the faculty of morality in the middling grade, during the three periods of seven days or upon their completion, whether while circumambulating or in seated meditation, they suddenly see various wondrous portents, namely bright flowers, pure colors, and extraordinarily wondrous fragrances, and hear virtuous voices praising them, as described in the Bodhisattva Precepts of the Brahmajāla Sūtra. Having seen each of such auspicious signs, body and mind celebrate with joy, obtaining the bliss of Dharma joy without any bad signs—this is called the sign of knowing that the faculty of morality is purified in the middling grade. As for the sign of the purification of the faculty of morality in the superior grade, during the three periods of seven days or upon their completion, whether circumambulating or in seated meditation, although they do not realize various Dharma gates, their body and mind are peaceful and tranquil; within the quiet mind, they themselves see signs of their body's morality being pure, namely seeing their body clothed in pure Dharma robes, their deportment orderly and correct, their physical marks dignified and solemn, and among a pure assembly they themselves see signs of wholesome karma distinctly clear, the signs of the three sections of precepts appearing in succession; their faithful mind unfolds, their mind obtains Dharma joy, secure and happy without fear; seeing within the mind of concentration each of such signs of wholesome karma—this is called the sign of the purification of the faculty of morality in the superior grade. By means of these three grades of features, one verifies that the faculty of morality gradually attains purification. Their signs are numerous and cannot be explained in detail. If transgressions are heavy and hard to eliminate, yet one can apply the mind with utmost earnestness without ceasing repentance, at times one may see various signs of transgression—namely seeing lack of head or hands, deep pits, turbid water, fierce fire, and foul filth, various evil realms of experience. Having seen them, fear arises in the mind, and one should redouble repentance. When repentance does not cease, one will subsequently also attain the purification of morality.
