> Answer: "The Pure Land is supreme and wonderful; its essence transcends the world. These three realms are the dark dwellings of ordinary beings in saṃsāra. Although their suffering and pleasure differ slightly and their lifespans vary in length, when viewed comprehensively, none are other than the long ferry of the contaminated, where fortune and misfortune ride upon one another, cycling endlessly, crossing the long ditch of miscellaneous births, contacts, feelings, and the four inversions, serving simultaneously as cause and effect, practicing deception together—deeply to be reviled. Therefore, the Pure Land is not subsumed by the three realms. Furthermore, relying on the Da zhidu lun, it says: 'As for the retribution of the Pure Land, because it lacks desire, it is not the desire realm; because it is ground-dwelling, it is not the form realm; because it has form and color, it is not the formless realm.' Although it is said to be ground-dwelling, it is exceedingly refined, wonderful, and peerless. Therefore Vasubandhu's treatise says: 'Contemplating the appearance of that world, / It surpasses the paths of the three realms, / Ultimate like empty space, / Vast and boundless.' Therefore the Larger Sūtra praises it: 'The wondrous land is vast, transcending numbers and limits, / Spontaneously composed of the seven jewels. / Arising from the adornment of the Buddha's original vow-power, / I bow my head to the pure, great gathering. / The radiance of that world is wondrous and peerless, / Pleasant, peaceful, and free from the four seasons. / With the power of benefiting self and benefiting others fully perfected, / I take refuge in the skillful adornment of upāya.'"
