> Furthermore, regarding what is called the adhipati-pratyaya of the samādhi of seeing the Buddha: it is as the Guan jing states: Vaidehī, queen of the king of Magadha, constantly wished within the palace to see the Buddha, weeping and paying homage from afar facing Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa. The Buddha knew her thought from afar, and vanished from Mount Gṛdhra\[kūṭa\] to appear in the royal palace. When the queen raised her head, she immediately saw the World-Honoured One, his body purplish-golden, sitting upon a precious lotus flower, with Maudgalyāyana and Ānanda standing in attendance to his left and right, and Śakra and Brahmā in mid-air scattering flowers in offering. Seeing the Buddha, the queen threw her entire body to the ground, weeping aloud, seeking pity and repenting before the Buddha: "My only wish is for the Tathāgata to teach me to contemplate the place of pure karma." Furthermore, as this sūtra bears witness, not only was it that the queen saw the Buddha through the utmost sincerity of her heart, but \[the Buddha\] also established the teaching for ordinary people of the future. Provided only that one has the mind desiring to see \[him\], if one focuses on recollecting the Buddha with utmost sincerity just as the queen did, one will definitely see \[him\] without doubt. This is precisely the external support bestowed by the power of Amitābha Buddha's three vows of mindfulness, whereby one is enabled to see the Buddha. What is meant by the three powers is as the Pratyutpanna-buddha-saṃmukhāvasthita-samādhi-sūtra states: first, seeing the Buddha because of the sustained mindfulness by the power of his great vows; second, seeing the Buddha because of the sustained mindfulness by the power of samādhi concentration; third, seeing the Buddha because of the sustained mindfulness by the power of his fundamental merits. In the conditions for seeing the Buddha below, the principle is the same throughout; hence it is called the adhipati-pratyaya of the samādhi of seeing the Buddha.
