> Question: In works like the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā, the great treatise masters such as Asanga and Vasubandhu, in explaining the various expressions and meanings of the sūtras and treatises, speak of the four intentions and four secret intentions, \[stating that\] attaining rebirth in the West merely through making a vow is an intention regarding another time. Today, when you encourage people to cultivate the practices for the West and immediately attain rebirth, how does that make sense? For over a hundred years since the Mahāyānasaṃgraha \[was translated\] until now, the worthy masters have all seen this treatise passage and not cultivated the pure practices for the West. Now if you say that one attains rebirth, does this not contradict the treatise?
