> Question: If upon being born in the pure land all evils do not arise, does this mean that afflictions do not arise either? Even a bodhisattva of the prathamā bhūmi still has subtle defilements of breaking precepts, a bodhisattva of the third bhūmi still gives rise to self-grasping, and up to the seventh bhūmi there is still the obstacle of attachment to the Buddha and attachment to bodhi. How could one who is also born in that land, being presently an ordinary person, not give rise to any evil afflictions at all?
