> I explain: They attain rebirth. It is simply that the person's karmic practice has already been accomplished and the defilement of their sins eliminated; even if \[life\] is prolonged for many days, they still attain rebirth. However, there are two kinds: First, after cultivating blessings, they do not die for many days, but that person creates no further grave sins. From time to time they give rise to neutral states of mind; these states of mind cannot incur good or evil retributions, so by relying on the previous buddhānusmṛti they immediately attain rebirth. Second, after that person practices buddhānusmṛti, they do not die for a long time, and they further stir up evil thoughts and give rise to unwholesome karma; one fears that this person mostly will not be born in the Pure Land. A sūtra states: 'A single thought of anger obstructs hundreds of thousands of Dharma gates.' It also states: 'The harm of anger destroys all wholesome dharmas; among thieves who plunder merit, none surpasses anger.' Although that person had previous wholesome \[deeds\] such as meditative contemplation and buddhānusmṛti, these are all damaged by anger, and they cannot attain rebirth, not to mention other sinful karmas obstructing all wholesome practices. As a sūtra says: 'Karma created at the moment of death receives retribution first.' At death, if the intention is heavier, it receives \[retribution\] first; if light and heavy are equal, the earlier one receives it first. Because this person subsequently has much sin, one fears they cannot attain rebirth.
