> Second, regarding the contrast between exclusive and non-exclusive: The dwelling places of bodhisattvas from the eighth bhūmi upward are entitled to be called pure lands, because they exclusively transcend the affairs of the three realms, and also because they are endowed with the exclusive meaning in four propositions; all dwelling places of the seventh bhūmi and below are not yet called pure lands, because they do not exclusively transcend the three realms, or if they transcend the three realms by the power of vows, they do not fully possess the four propositions of exclusivity—namely, exclusively blissful, exclusively pure, exclusively disaster-free, and exclusively autonomous. When those of the seventh bhūmi and below appear, they sometimes give rise to retributive indeterminate minds, and the four afflictions of manas sometimes become active; therefore, it is not exclusively pure, nor is it exclusively produced by the power of mundane wholesome dharmas. The commentary explains: "Relying on the good is called supramundane"; from the eighth bhūmi upward up to the Buddha stage is called supramundane. Supramundane dharmas are antidotes to mundane dharmas, and supramundane dharmas serve as remedies for supramundane dharmas. Taking the four conditions as its characteristics, because this pure land arises from supramundane wholesome merits, it does not take the truth of origination as its cause, and so on at length.
