> Now, although this two-fascicle \[sūtra\] speaks of ten recitations, it also possesses these two meanings of implicit and explicit; however, among them, the explicit ten recitations differ slightly in meaning from the Contemplation Sūtra. In that Contemplation Sūtra, the five heinous crimes are not excluded, but only the transgression of slandering the Vaipulya is excluded; this two-fascicle sūtra excludes the five heinous crimes and slander of the true Dharma. How does one reconcile such a contradiction? That sūtra speaks of those who, although committing the five heinous crimes, are able to repent relying on the Mahāyāna teaching; this sūtra speaks of those who do not repent. Due to this meaning, they do not contradict each other. Some say: "The ten recitations of the Maitreyaparipṛcchā-sūtra are not spoken for the purely pure land, but are also spoken in the same way as the Contemplation Sūtra for the fourth pair's pure land. Why is this? Although the ten recitations spoken of are said not to be the mindfulness of worldly people, they are the ten recitations of loving-kindness, compassion, and so forth cultivated by bodhisattvas of the ten faiths and three stages of worthiness." Therefore, the Assembly on Developing the Superior Aspiration in the Mahāratnakūṭa-sūtra says: "At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! As the Buddha has spoken of the merits and benefits of Amitābha Buddha's world of Sukhāvatī, if there are sentient beings who generate ten kinds of minds and, according to each mind, single-mindedly focus upon Amitābha Buddha, then when this person's life ends, they will attain rebirth in that Buddha's world. World-Honored One! What are called the ten kinds of minds generated, by means of which minds one will attain rebirth in that Buddha's world?' The Buddha told Maitreya Bodhisattva: 'Maitreya! Such ten minds cannot be generated by foolish worldlings, unwholesome men endowed with afflictions. What are the ten? First, toward sentient beings, giving rise to great loving-kindness without a mind of injury; second, toward sentient beings, giving rise to great loving-kindness without a mind of vexation; third, toward the Buddha's true Dharma, not sparing bodily life, with a mind delighting in protecting it; fourth, toward all dharmas, generating superior patience without a mind of grasping; fifth, not being greedy for gain and offerings, with a respectful and venerating mind of pure aspiration; sixth, seeking the Buddha's omniscient knowledge, at all times without a mind of forgetfulness; seventh, toward sentient beings, being respectful and reverent without a mind of contempt; eighth, not clinging to worldly discourse, giving rise to a resolute mind regarding the factors of enlightenment; ninth, planting various wholesome roots with a mind that is unpolluted and pure; tenth, toward all Tathāgatas, abandoning all signs and giving rise to a mind of mindful recollection. Maitreya! These are called the ten kinds of minds generated by a bodhisattva, by means of which minds one will attain rebirth in Amitābha Buddha's world of Sukhāvatī. Maitreya! If a person, among these ten kinds of minds, accomplishes even a single mind and delights in wishing to be reborn in that Buddha's world, it is impossible that they will not attain rebirth.'"
