> To state the essentials: noble ones of the triyāna, the three levels of worthies prior to the bhūmis, those from the generation of the mind in the seven preparatory stages of the two vehicles onward, nominal bodhisattvas, down to those prior to the preparatory path, men and women of the fourfold assembly, the genderless, those of dual gender, and even dragons, ghosts, and the eight classes—so long as they can generate the mind of bodhi, exclusively concentrate on Amitābha Buddha, loathe the defiled lands, and joyfully seek the pure land, having correct mindfulness appear before them at the time of death, all will attain rebirth. If they are valiant and diligent, distinct in their contemplative practice, and their final mind at death is undisturbed, they will all attain higher rebirth; down to those whose final ten thoughts at death are continuous and present before them, they attain the lower grades. Within this, the rebirth of bodhisattvas has its own three categories; the rebirth of the two vehicles has its own upper, middle, and lower; and the rebirth of ordinary beings has its own upper, middle, and lower. Each has nine grades, but the sūtras cannot distinguish them in full detail; combining Mahāyāna, Hīnayāna, and ordinary beings, they discuss nine grades, but in ultimate reality there are immeasurable distinctions.
