> I reply: The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'All Tathāgatas share the same single dharmakāya, a single body, a single wisdom, and likewise their powers and fearlessnesses.' A verse from the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: 'Kāśyapa, Krakucchanda, and Kanakamuni are myself; by means of these four kinds of equality, I speak for the Buddha's heirs.' Regarding the four kinds of equality: first is equality of name, in that they all share the name 'Buddha'; second is equality of speech, in that they all possess the voice of the kalaviṅka and the voice of Brahmā; third is equality of teachings, in that they all attain the factors of enlightenment and unimpeded wisdom; fourth is equality of body, in that their dharmakāya and rūpakāya with their marks and signs are without difference. The Awakening of Faith says: 'Delusion arises based on directions, but the directions themselves do not shift.' In this manner, when one who is awakened is awakened to a single direction, all directions naturally become correct; when one who is mindful is mindful of a single buddha, all buddhas manifest before them. As the sūtra says: 'The water does not ascend, and the moon does not descend.' Through the causes and conditions of purity and light, the bright moon in empty space manifests in clear water; that buddha does not come, and my body does not go, yet through the causes and conditions of buddha-mindfulness, the jewel moon of the Tathāgata appears in the water of the mind. As the verse says: 'The bodhisattva's cool moon / roams in ultimate emptiness; / when the mind-water of sentient beings is pure, / the shadow of bodhi appears therein.'"
