> The Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra states: "'The sincere mind' refers to sentient beings of genuine practice. 'Utmost' means dedicated; 'sincere' means genuine. As for 'deep', the fruit of Buddhahood is deep and lofty, and because one seeks it with this mind, it is called the 'deep mind'. It also arises from deep principle, and it arises from a rich joy in roots of goodness; hence the Daśabhūmika Sūtra says, 'Entering into the deep and broad mind,' and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says, 'The roots are deep and hard to uproot,' therefore it is called the 'deep mind.'" Shandao explains: "Physically bowing to that Buddha, verbally praising and calling upon that Buddha, and mentally contemplating that Buddha—because the three modes of action are genuine, it is called the sincere mind. With a genuine mind of faith, one faithfully knows that oneself is fully beset by defilements and transmigrates in the three realms; one faithfully knows that by reciting the name according to Amitābha's original vow, down to as few as ten recitations, one will attain rebirth, without even a single thought of doubt; hence it is called the deep mind. All the roots of goodness one performs are entirely dedicated toward the vow for rebirth; hence it is called the mind of dedication and making vows. If one is endowed with these three minds, one will certainly attain rebirth. If even one mind is lacking, one will not attain rebirth."
