On account of their evil karma, they ought to fall into the evil destinies. When such a foolish person is on the verge of death, he encounters a good spiritual friend who preaches the wondrous Dharma for him and instructs him to practice buddha-mindfulness. Oppressed by suffering, this person has no leisure to practice buddha-mindfulness. The good friend tells him: 'If you are unable to be mindful, you should recite the name of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life.' Sincerely keeping his voice unbroken in this manner, he fully recites 'Namo Amitābha Buddha' ten times. Because he recites the Buddha's name, with each thought-moment the transgressions of eighty billion kalpas of birth and death are eradicated.
