> The Record of Peaceful Nurture says: 'The former text says that in reality there is no eater, whereas the subsequent two sūtras say they eat to produce energy. By analogy with the desire realm where corporeal food has not yet been abandoned, they must therefore eat it. But according to \[Pūrṇa\] Maitrāyaṇīputra attaining buddhahood, where the joy of the Dharma and the delight of dhyāna serve as food with no further thought of other food, then the Pure Land also allows that in reality there are no eaters. One should know that since the hundred flavors and four subtle elements in that land are provided according to wish, how could eating and not eating be restricted to a single path? That the two sūtras speak differently is merely accommodating the preferences of the time.'
