> The elder said: 'Good man! If I wish to see Amitāyus Tathāgata of the World of Peace and Joy, I see him at will. In this way, if I wish to see all the Tathāgatas of all the worlds in the ten directions, I see them at will. I am able to comprehend that all the Tathāgatas' land adornments, supernatural powers, and the like come from nowhere and go nowhere, having no path of movement and no dwelling place. They are also like my own body, having no coming and going, no path of movement, and no dwelling place. Yet that Tathāgata does not come here, nor do I go there. This is because I know that all Buddhas and my own mind are like dreams; what is seen in dreams arises from discrimination. I see all Buddhas arising from my own mind; furthermore, I know that my own mind is like water in a vessel, understanding that all dharmas are like reflections in water. Furthermore, I know that my own mind is like an illusionist's trick, knowing that all Buddhas are like illusory creations. Furthermore, I know that to one's own mind all Buddhas and bodhisattvas are like echoes, just as an empty valley produces an echo in response to a sound. Understanding one's own mind, one sees the Buddha according to one's mindfulness. Knowing thus and recollecting thus, all the Buddhas I see arise from my own mind' (this comes from the Zhenyuan version of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra).
