> The Buddha said: 'If, when a person's life ends, they know beforehand that the time has come, maintain right mindfulness clearly, bathe and put on clean clothes, pass away auspiciously, with radiant light shining on their body, see the marks and characteristics of the Buddha, and all good signs appear together, know for certain that this person will definitely be reborn in the Pure Land. If a person practices buddha-mindfulness and upholds the precepts without a mind of energetic diligence, and at life's end displays neither good signs nor evil signs, the underworld will not receive them and Peaceful Nurture will not embrace them, but they pass away as if in sleep. This person has not severed their doubts, and will be born in the Castle of Doubt, where they will experience joy for five hundred years; only after cultivating faith and vows anew will they return to the Pure Land. If a person gives rise to a mind of compassion, maintains right mindfulness at the end, has no attachment in their heart to wealth, treasures, wife, or children, their eyes and complexion are pure, they look upward with a smile, contemplate that the heavenly palaces are coming to welcome them, their ears hear heavenly music, and their eyes see divine youths—upon relinquishing this retribution body, they are certain to be born in the heavenly realms. If a person gives rise to a gentle and good mind, generates a mind of merit, has no disease or distress in the body, fondly remembers their parents, wife, and children, is unconfused in their mind regarding good and evil, has an upright mind, leaves instructions for the family property, and bids farewell before departing, they are certain to be born in the human realm. If a person looks upon their spouse and children with evil eyes, reaches into the air with their hands, is unaware of their urination and defecation, their body constantly emits a foul stench, their two eyes are blood-red, they lie face down or curl their body onto their left side, their hundred joints ache, or they see evil signs, are unable to speak, groan and cry out, their karmic creditors appear before them, their consciousness is scattered, they are wildly deluded and confounded, their whole body is cold as ice, their hands are clenched in dead fists, and their body is stiff as a stone—this person, at life's end, is certain to enter the hells. If a person frequently licks their lips, their body is hot as fire, they constantly suffer from hunger and thirst, delight in talking about food and drink, keep their mouth open without closing it, crave and cling to wealth and treasures, find it hard to cut off their life abruptly, and depart with eyes open—this person is certain to enter the hungry ghosts. If a person's body is afflicted with severe illness, their mind is dim and scattered as if in clouds and mist, they fear hearing the Buddha's name, they greatly crave and eat the taste of blood and flesh, do not accept exhortation and transformation, cling fondly to wife and children, curl their fingers and toes, sweat all over their body, emit coarse and harsh sounds, and chew foam in their mouth—when these signs appear, they are certain to enter the animal realm.'
