> Regarding deeds of rebirth in the Pure Land, former worthies composed biographies in several compilations, recording no fewer than five hundred people. Throughout antiquity and the present, whether ordained or lay, down to lowly men and maidservants, those who could know our Buddha's fundamental vow to gather sentient beings, cultivating in secret and directing their aspirations covertly, receiving verification at the end of life, cannot be reckoned by quantity. How could they all enter the brushes of Qian and Dong from our school? Now, for the time being, I have selected over ten biographies, both already recorded and unrecorded, so that future generations may know the source and stream, recognize models and examples, and not merely bring forth faithful minds.
