> The monk Fazhi traveled and studied in Dongyue. Whenever there was anyone well-versed in the scriptural meanings of the Mahāyāna or Hīnayāna, Zhi was sure to study under him. For this reason he was learned and heard much, with few peers. In his later years, considering that among direct paths none surpassed buddha-mindfulness, he maintained uninterrupted mindfulness morning and evening for seven years. Afterward he reflected, saying: "If one commits a single duṣkṛta, one undergoes its retribution for an intermediate kalpa. This is truly credible, and it is incurred for that reason. But that a single recitation of Amitābha Buddha's name should eradicate the heavy sins of millions of kalpas—concerning this I have profound doubts." Someone said to Zhi: "Have no doubts. The teaching instructs in buddha-mindfulness: with long practice comes merit, with merit comes transformation, and with transformation samādhi manifests. Now your doubt is a doubt in the Buddha. How could there be anything to doubt in the Buddha's words? The Śākya Honoured One extended his broad and long tongue, and the Buddhas of the ten directions joined in praising the Pure Land, precisely because it is difficult to establish the faculty of faith in sentient beings, and thus they exhorted and inspired them." Zhi severed his doubts, severed all conditioning at Guoqing Monastery, and practiced buddha-mindfulness with single-minded devotion. When his contemplation reached its utmost, it moved Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta to manifest their bodies. On another day, he was further moved by the heavenly crown and treasure vase, whose light shone upon his body. Zhi said to monastics and laypeople: "My rebirth in the Pure Land has its appointed day. Who can prepare a feast to send me off?" The assembly laughed and replied: "We fear only that you, O practitioner of the Way, will not be able to do so; we certainly will not decline." Thereupon they agreed to gather for a meal three days later. When the meal was over, Zhi showed no abnormality; some among the assembly suspected he was making sport of them, and so spent the night in his room to watch over him. Before the night ended, Zhi sat on a rope bed in buddha-mindfulness, peacefully seated, and passed away. That night, a golden light came from the west, illuminating several hundred li. The fishermen on the river thought dawn had broken; looking at one another from boat to boat, all arose in astonishment.
