> Regarding vertical escape, śrāvakas cultivate the four truths, pratyekabuddhas cultivate the twelve links of dependent origination, and bodhisattvas cultivate the six perfections and myriad practices. This involves stages and positions, like passing the imperial examination, which requires having one's own talent and learning. It is also like advancing through bureaucratic ranks, which requires having achievements. Regarding horizontal escape, it is buddha-mindfulness seeking rebirth in the Pure Land. It is like hereditary privilege, where the merit derives from the other-power of ancestors, regardless of whether one possesses academic learning or not. It is also like a universal promotion by imperial grace, where the merit derives from the king, regardless of the depth of one's past tenure. Within horizontal escape, there are the two kinds of goodness: focused and unfocused. Therefore, Venerable Shandao established the two cultivations: exclusive and miscellaneous. Miscellaneous cultivation refers to diffusely cultivating various wholesome deeds and dedicating them for adornment. Exclusive cultivation means that the body must exclusively bow to Amitābha Buddha without mixing other prostrations; the mouth must exclusively recite Amitābha Buddha without reciting other names or intoning other sūtras and dhāraṇīs; the mind must exclusively contemplate Amitābha Buddha without cultivating other contemplations. If one practices exclusively, ten out of ten will be reborn, and a hundred out of a hundred will be reborn. If one practices miscellaneous deeds, perhaps one or two out of a hundred will be reborn, or three to five out of a thousand will be reborn. Now seeing the people of the world, there are those who bow three thousand times a day to Amitābha Buddha, those who recite the name of Amitābha Buddha a hundred thousand times a day, and those who practice sitting day and night exclusively contemplating Amitābha Buddha: all have resonant responses, which can be verified.
