> Originally, a single thought is intrinsically fused and all dharmas are unobstructed; but as the perfuming encountered varies, the karmic retributions produced differ accordingly. Therefore, if one cultivates in accordance with nature, the pure lands of all buddhas are revealed; if one acts according to passions, one revolves in the wheel of suffering of the five destinies. This is why for those dwelling in the Sahā world, ascending and escaping is exceptionally difficult, while those who fall are numerous. Hence the sūtra says: 'Those who obtain a human body are like the soil on a fingernail; those who lose a human body are like the soil of the great earth.' Only when the practices of the three vehicles are fully perfected can one escape taking birth in the four destinies. Because the objective realms are coarse and powerful and defilements rage fiercely, relying on one's own power to seek deliverance is truly difficult for people. But as for those born in Peaceful Nurture, the land is adorned and body and mind are pure; straight until the attainment of buddhahood they do not fall into the three miserable paths. The sūtra says: 'Even the names of the evil destinies do not exist, much less their reality.' It also says: 'All sentient beings born there are avaivartika.' If one wishes to be born there, one should simply recite that Buddha's name and cultivate that Buddha's compassion; one will surely be gathered and received by that Buddha's original vows. Leaving behind this reward-body, one will definitely be reborn in that land. This is completely as the sūtras explain; it is truly no fabricated talk. Now we bind ten thousand people into a single society, mindfully focusing from thought to thought, making daily commitments, gathering together in one place in the middle of spring every year, jointly cultivating offerings, and jointly listening to the sounds of the Dharma. Bringing together those ten thousand minds into a single resolve, let us make it a determined karma and vow to attain rebirth! Moreover, the lifespan granted by retribution is like a candle in the wind; if a single breath fails to return, the three miserable paths appear before us. How could one be lax with oneself and not consider the retribution to come? One should rely on the Buddha's words and not comply with human sentiments. Abruptly cease all external conditioning, and diligently devote oneself solely to buddha-mindfulness!
