> In my foolishness, I set my resolve upon pure karma, vowing to extend it equally to all sentient beings so that we may return together to the realm of true reality. Thus, I compiled the Lebang wenlei and circulated it in the world. As for the remaining fragments of text and solitary meanings, as well as whatever I saw and heard that could further aid and support pure karma, I subsequently recorded them as the Lebang yigao, following the notion of "gleanings" from Confucian classical texts. Where the language was prolix, I have briefly set forth the essential outline; though it cannot be said to be complete, I hope it may provide some slight insight. Written on the first morning of spring in the jiazi year \[1204\] as a preface.
