> Alcohol, meat, and sexual desire— / these three are not separated from one another. / If a person consumes alcohol and meat, / once physical strength is flourishing and abundant, / one will inevitably think of engaging in sexual desire. / If a person indulges recklessly in sexual desire, / once blood and qi are dried up, / one will inevitably think of consuming alcohol and meat. / If a person cuts off alcohol and meat, / naturally one leaves behind sexual desire; / if a person leaves behind sexual desire, / naturally one forgets alcohol and meat. / If one can eliminate these three matters, / all precepts will be complete. / If one does not cut off these three, / one will be long imprisoned in the jail of the three realms of existence; / discussing Chan and expounding the teachings / will all be slandering the Buddha's Dharma. / Chan Master Zhijue said: / 'If one does not abstain from eating meat, / one eternally severs the seed of compassion; / if one does not abstain from drinking alcohol, / one eternally severs the seed of wisdom; / if one does not abstain from sexual desire, / one eternally severs the seed of purity.' / Abstaining from meat manifests original compassion; / abstaining from alcohol brings forth original wisdom; / abstaining from sexual desire restores original purity. / Original purity is the Dharmakāya; / original wisdom is prajñā; / original compassion is liberation. / The three bodies and three virtues / are all born from these three practices. / Therefore this Dharma gate / is named Compassion, Wisdom, and Pure Conduct; / all relying on the Mahayana teaching, / they are entirely the words of all Buddhas. / I universally vow that practicing as taught, / we may be born together in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
