> The Chuandeng lu records that one day a student asked Chan Master Haihui: "I vow to be reborn in the Pure Land, but I do not know whether the Pure Land actually exists or not." The Master said: "The sūtra says, 'If one desires to attain the Pure Land, one must purify one's mind. In accordance with the purity of one's mind, the Buddha-land is purified.' If the mind is pure, wherever one is is entirely the Pure Land. For example, if one is born into the household of a king, one is certain to succeed to the king's heritage. Arousing the aspiration toward the Buddha path is being born in a pure Buddha-land. If one's mind is impure, wherever one is born will be a defiled land. Purity and defilement reside in the mind, not in the land."
