> The Pure Land teaching appears largely in the Larger Amitābha-sūtra and the Sixteen Contemplations Sūtra. It contains the shallow and the deep: that which is shallow has small merit and holds a low rank among the nine grades; that which is deep has great merit and holds a high rank among the nine grades. Yet all alike bring escape from saṃsāra and longevity without aging. Now I first set forth the shallow, and next reach the deep, according to what each person practices.
