> Dagong's given name was Shi; he netted fish for a living. One day he changed his occupation, reciting Amitābha Buddha ten thousand times a day, eating vegetarian food, and practicing without ever pausing even briefly. Later, free of illness, he told his family: "I see Amitābha Buddha with Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta in front of the gate. I am now returning to the Pure Land." The next day he said again: "I have already seen the golden lotus coming to welcome me." He asked for an incense burner, sat peacefully, formed a mudrā, and passed away. Nearby and far in the village, music and wondrous fragrance were heard and smelled, not dissipating all day long. This occurred in the sixth year of Zhenghe.
