> The \*Avataṃsaka-sūtra\* says: "When a person is born, two devas accompany the person: the first is named Co-born, and the second is named Same-name. The devas constantly see the person, but the person does not see the devas." Are these two devas not of the cohort of the youths of the two divisions of good and evil? Whenever a person raises a thought, utters a word, or takes a step, if he constantly remembers these two devas, he will be able to face people without shame. Cultivating the Pure Land in this manner, one will certainly attain rebirth in the highest grade of the highest category. Someone asked: "If each person has two devas, why are there so many devas?" I replied: "A single moon manifests everywhere in all waters; must there necessarily be many moons?"
