> Xiangguangzi retired from clamour to a mountain monastery to cultivate pure karma. A Chan practitioner, gazing proudly and striding high, passed by the dwelling and engaged in conversation. Seeing on the desk the newly composed Comprehensive Treatise on the Pure Land by Upāsaka Shitou, he had not finished reading through the work when he raised his voice and said: 'If we discuss this teaching gate, it was originally used to guide those of middling and lower capacities. Why? People of middling and lower capacities have slight wisdom and heavy karma; by recollecting the Buddha and practicing buddhānusmṛti, they obtain rebirth in the Pure Land, like an unhewn boulder boarding a boat can reach the shore—they truly ought to practice buddhānusmṛti. As for those like us, we clearly understand the original source: this mind is itself the Buddha, so where else should one seek the Buddha? This mind is itself the land, so where else should one see the land? Within the reality-principle, seeking the marks of sentient beings and buddhas, going and coming, saṃsāra and the three times, not a hair-tip can be found. Merely speaking of becoming a buddha is already redundant talk; how could there further be matters of distinguishing pure from defiled, or abandoning this to be born there? If one awakens at this point, one is an untrammeled person at ease: lust, anger, and ignorance are all Amitābha's impartial bodhimaṇḍa, immutably unmoving like tathatā. Why abandon one's own Buddha to bow to that gold and bronze? Moreover, to claim that both the awakened and unawakened should cultivate it is to stir up trouble where there is none; this is what I do not understand.'
