> Universally on behalf of our teachers, monks, parents, spiritual friends, and sentient beings of the Dharma realm, may we cut off the three obstacles and together attain rebirth in the land of Amitābha Buddha; we take refuge and repent. The repentance and aspiration of the upper two grades are as before: when essential, take the first from among the essential; when brief, take the middle from among the brief; when extensive, take the lower from among the extensive. As for the extensive, it exhorts those who genuinely have the aspiration for rebirth—either facing the fourfold assembly, facing the Buddhas of the ten directions, facing the relics, revered images, and the great assembly, or facing a single person. If one is alone and the like, one also turns toward the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and all of empty space, and to the entire realm of sentient beings, fully laying bare and repenting before them. Repentance has three grades: upper, middle, and lower. In upper-grade repentance, blood flows from the pores of the body and blood comes out of the eyes; this is called upper-grade repentance. In middle-grade repentance, hot sweat issues from the pores over the entire body, and blood flows from the eyes; this is called middle-grade repentance. In lower-grade repentance, the entire body is thoroughly hot, and tears flow from the eyes; this is called lower-grade repentance. Although these three grades differ, they belong to those who have long planted the roots of virtue that are factors of liberation, causing them in this life to revere the Dharma and respect others, not sparing their physical life; even if repenting small offenses, it penetrates to the Dharma and to the marrow. For those capable of repenting in this way, without question of how long or recent \[the offenses are\], all heavy obstacles are instantly and completely eliminated. If it is not done in this way, even if one runs urgently during the twelve periods of day and night, in the end it will be of no benefit. If one cannot do this, one should know that although one cannot shed tears or blood and the like, if one can simply reach through with a true mind, it is equivalent to the above.
