> Amitābha's five tones resound grandly; / A wise one transmitted them into the five turbidities. / Hearing the sound, those in the five sufferings all attain bliss; / Riding these five tones, they enter the lotus palace. / The wise one out of compassion transmitted the five tones, / Intending by transmitting them to extinguish the five burnings. / Since the five burnings are extinguished because of the five tones, / All rely on the five tones to transcend worldly toil. / Grandly the five tones ring with pure sound; / Deeply like thunder they express wondrous sounds. / The holy assembly joins together in praising them; / Whenever people hear them, all bring forth the aspiration. / The subtle five sounds of the West / Have been brought to the five turbidities to rescue sentient beings. / Those in the five destinies who hear the name are all liberated; / The five tones guide them to the city of jeweled lotuses. / Clearly the five tones arose from Hengshan; / Resonantly they now pervade the five regions of India. / The five assemblies all say they bring benefit and bliss; / In the Latter Dharma they will still remain for five hundred years. / Amitābha's five tones penetrate people's hearts; / Plaintive and compassionate sounds wind deep and far. / The Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra speaks like this: / The jeweled waters flow constantly, expounding wondrous sounds. / The five tones reverberate out into the clouds and mist; / Their clear sound rings bright across Ganges sands. / If you can recite them constantly morning and evening, / In life after life you will reside in the Buddha's house. / When fragrant breezes rustle and touch the body, / Solely by means of the five tones do they sever greed and anger. / The five sounds can also purify the five aggregates; / Hearing the name for five kalpas frees one from worldly dust. / Western drums, music, strings, and songs, / Zithers, flutes, and pipes harmoniously blend together; / Each and every one proclaims only the Dharma of the five tones; / Sound after sound, they all expound the six pāramitās.
