> A monk asked, “What are the five karmas of immediate retribution?” The Master said, “Killing one's father, harming one's mother, shedding the Buddha's blood, disrupting the harmony of the Saṅgha, and burning the scriptures and images—these are the five karmas of immediate retribution.” The monk said, “What is the father?” The Master said, “Ignorance is the father: when in a single thought of your mind you seek where it arises and ceases and cannot find it, like an echo responding in empty space, having nothing to do anywhere—this is called killing the father.” The monk said, “What is the mother?” The Master said, “Greedy attachment is the mother: when in a single thought of your mind you enter the desire realm seeking its greedy attachment, and see only the empty marks of all dharmas, without attachment anywhere—this is called harming the mother.” The monk said, “What is shedding the Buddha's blood?” The Master said, “When in the pure dharmadhātu not a single thought of your mind produces intellectual understanding, so that everywhere is pitch black—this is shedding the Buddha's blood.” The monk said, “What is disrupting the harmony of the Saṅgha?” The Master said, “When in a single thought of your mind you directly penetrate the afflictions and fetters to be like empty space with nothing to rely upon—this is disrupting the harmony of the Saṅgha.” The monk said, “What is burning the scriptures and images?” The Master said, “Seeing that causes and conditions are empty, mind is empty, and dharmas are empty, decisively cutting them off in a single thought, completely detached with nothing to do—this is burning the scriptures and images. Virtuous monks! If you comprehend like this, you will avoid being obstructed by the names of ordinary and sacred. In a single thought your mind merely forms real understanding based on empty fists and pointing fingers, falsely conjuring up monsters amidst the sense-faculties, sense-objects, and dharmas, belittling yourself and shrinking back, saying: ‘I am an ordinary person; he is a sage.’ You bald fools! What is the deadly hurry? You put on his lion's skin, yet utter the cry of a jackal! A great fellow does not have the spirit of a fellow; you are unwilling to have faith in the things of your own house, and just seek outwardly, falling into the idle names and phrases of ancient people, leaning on yin to gain yang, unable to penetrate directly, grasping conditions upon meeting an environment, becoming attached upon encountering dust, raising delusions wherever you touch, lacking any settled standard of your own.
