> Ascending the hall, he said: "The Way has no mind to accord with people; people have no mind to accord with the Way. If you wish to understand the meaning within this: one is old, one is not old." Later, a monk asked Caoshan: "What is the one that is old?" Caoshan said: "Not supporting." \[The monk\] said: "What is the one that is not old?" Caoshan said: "A withered tree." The monk also brought this up to Xiaoyao Zhong. Zhong said: "The three obediences and the six principles of poetry." He also said: "This matter must be wondrously understood; the matter lies in its wonder, the essence lies in the place of wonder."
