> The Master was indisposed and instructed a śrāmaṇera to deliver a message to Yunju, admonishing him, "If he asks whether the upādhyāya is well and at ease, just say that the path of Yunyan is about to be cut off. When you deliver these words, you must stand far off, lest he strike you." The śrāmaṇera received the instruction and went. Before the sound of his message had died away, he was already struck with a blow of the staff by Yunju, and the śrāmaṇera had no words. (Tong'an Xian said in his place, "In that case, the single branch of Yunyan has not fallen." Yunju Xi said, "Tell me, sthavira, is the path of Yunyan cut off or not?" Chongshou Chou said, "What was the meaning of the ancient one striking this blow?")
