> From the end of the Dazhong era of the Tang dynasty, the Master guided and gathered students at Mount Xinfeng, and later widely transformed people at Dongshan in Gao'an of Yuzhang. He expediently set up the Five Ranks, skillfully gathering the three faculties, greatly proclaiming the single voice, and broadly propagating the myriad types. Drawing forth the precious sword horizontally, he cut down the dense forest of various views; in wondrous harmony and vast penetration, he severed the myriad kinds of far-fetched interpretations. Furthermore, he gained Caoshan, who deeply understood the clear purpose, wondrously singing the fine counsel: the Way matches ruler and minister, and the interplay of the crooked and upright. Through this, the profound style of Dongshan spread throughout the world; hence the masters of the various quarters all revered it together, calling it the Dongcao School.
