> The third is the śramaṇa's different species (later called 'wearing fur and sporting horns'): meaning that having first known the existence of the fundamental matter, one completely destroys all present ordinary and sagely causes and effects, virtues and practices, and only then attains identity with the substance; this is named an independent person, and is also named the śramaṇa's affair of being praised as severed; only then are internal and external sentiments forgotten, the matters of the three times exhausted, and the absence of any remnant attained; this is named a matter on the Buddha's side, and is also called pointing one finger to heaven and earth, and also called being endowed with the great śramaṇa; turning away from the matters on the śramaṇa's side of being praised as severed and not entering the various superior reward-stages is only then named the śramaṇa's conduct, and is also called the śramaṇa's turning around, and also called wearing fur and sporting horns, and also called the water buffalo; at such a time one only then can enter the different species, which is also called a matter on the side of form-species. Therefore the ancients said: 'The head is three feet long, the neck is two inches short' (in the ancestral master Jixiang's autograph it does not say 'long'). It is simply this principle; one must not understand it otherwise.
