> When the Master was on pilgrimage, he asked Chan Master Wushi Guan, 'Who is the master of Vairocana and the lord of the dharmakāya?' Wushi said, 'If I were to tell you, there would be someone else.' The Master brought this up to Dongshan. Dongshan said, 'A fine topic for contemplation (huatou), but it just lacked a follow-up word. Why didn't you ask, "Why don't you speak?"' The Master went back and stepped forward with that question. Wushi said, 'If I say that I do not speak, that would mute my mouth; if I say that I do speak, that would stumble my tongue.' The Master returned and presented this to Dongshan, and Dongshan deeply approved of it.
