> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] said, "You venerable monks must first understand the patch-robed monk's nostrils. And what are the patch-robed monk's nostrils?" He then said, "Mahāprajñāpāramitā; today there is a great general labor." He then stepped down from the seat. A monk asked, "What is the intention of \[the Patriarch's\] coming from the West?" The Master said, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth." He advanced and asked, "Is there still anything beyond?" The Master said, "There is." He advanced and asked, "What is the transcendental matter?" The Master said, "Old Śākya is in the Western Heaven; Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva resides in the Eastern Land." A monk asked, "How is it when both parents are dead?" The Master said, "Put aside both being dead for now; which ones are your parents?" The monk said, "The suffering and pain are deep." The Master said, "Truly, truly." A monk asked, "What is a great donor?" The Master said, "Responding to encounters without distinguishing." A monk asked, "When a person who is utterly benighted comes, how does the Master rescue them?" The Master said, "Two layers of public cases, acknowledged with a single petition." A monk asked, "For what kind of person should the teachings be expounded?" The Master said, "Come closer and ask loudly." The monk stepped forward to ask, and the Master struck him. A monk asked, "How old is the Upādhyāya?" The Master said, "Seven times nine is sixty-eight." He advanced and asked, "Why is seven times nine sixty-eight?" The Master said, "I subtracted five years for your sake."
