> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] said: "The venerable upādhyāyas in all directions say that one must know there is an affair beyond sounds and forms. Talk like this deceives the sons and daughters of decent households. Sitting alone in a three-bay Dharma hall entertaining delusions, they have never even dreamt of our original teacher's essential purpose—how could they digest the offerings of the faithful? On the thirtieth day of the twelfth month, each and every one will have to repay them! Jump and hop as you please; all of you, make efforts on your own. Take care!" A monk asked: "When before one's eyes not a single dharma exists, can one still avoid birth and death or not?" The Master said: "You will not avoid it until the year of the donkey!" Another asked: "What is the Way?" The Master said: "Go!" He advanced and asked: "I do not understand; I beg the Master to speak." The Master said: "Ācārya! The official permit is clear; why repeat the verdict?" Another asked: "Is Vimalakīrti's one silence the same as speaking or not?" The Master said: "I have painfully taken note of your question." He advanced and said: "Then it is the same as speaking." The Master said: "What did you just say?" Another asked: "What is the pure dharmakāya?" The Master said: "The garden railing for medicinal herbs." He advanced and said: "How is it when one understands it just so?" The Master said: "A golden-haired lion."
