> One day the Master ascended the hall. A monk asked, "What is a drop of water from the source of Cao?" The Master said, "It is a drop of water from the source of Cao." The monk withdrew in bewilderment. At that time, State Preceptor Shao was at the side of his seat and was suddenly enlightened; Shao then reported his awakening to the Master. The Master said, "Hereafter you will be the teacher of kings, causing the ancestral way to shine brightly; I am not your equal." Later, the State Preceptor had a gāthā that said:
> "At the summit of the Peak of Penetrating the Mysterious, / It is not the human world.
> Outside the mind there are no dharmas; / Green mountains fill the eyes."
> When the Master heard it, he said, "With this single gāthā alone, my lineage will be raised up."
