> The Master occasionally gave informal discourses; since the words spoken upon ascending the hall were plainly set out, they are not recorded in detail here; questions and answers are merely recorded below. A monk asked: "The rain without clouds has already poured upon the Fen River; when will the parched grain sprout and bear fruit?" The Master said: "Mount Zixia is lofty and steep; a solitary peak pierces halfway into the sky." "How does one direct oneself towards it?" The Master said: "White Cloud Cliff has few guests; the red countenance is sufficient with golden lotuses." "Whose realm is this?" The Master said: "Pure and empty, without hindrance; inside and outside, a single round disc." "In that case, the thousand sages transmit it together without separation, and the myriad households and thousand gates are entirely at peace." The Master said: "Ten thousand miles of starry river share a single sky." He asked: "The hundred rivers compete in pouring, together returning to the sea; what is the matter on top of the myriad-fathom peak?" The Master said: "The level field has no need to produce brambles and thorns; the winding stream has no trouble flowing straight." He asked: "Xietuo struck Mañjuśrī; what was the meaning?" The Master said: "Again." The monk said nothing; the Master gave a sigh and then struck him. He asked: "Having question and having answer is merely ordinary; what about when there is no question and no answer?" The Master said: "Do not be inverted." "Is this not it?" The Master said: "Do not be inverted." He asked: "The bell and drum have just sounded, and the great assembly gathers like clouds; please, Master, bring forth the precise point." The Master struck the rope seat once. "Setting aside the precise point for now, please, Master, bring forth the whole of it." The Master struck the rope seat again. "The precise point and the whole bringing forth have been universally heard by the great assembly; please, Master, bring forth the matter beyond." The Master said: "Although I did not hit you, quickly make three prostrations." The student sighed; the Master said: "When weary, then rest." He asked: "When swallows return to the Eastern Sea and wild geese enter the southern sky, where does the Buddha Dharma return?" The Master said: "Its place of function is nowhere not pervasive; the four seas extend to the edge of the sky." "In that case, singing everywhere the song of the unarisen, the loud song is universally level." The Master said: "When spring comes, the hundred grasses flourish; when autumn departs, the leaves wither and decay." "In that case, I thank the Master for the instruction." The Master said: "Remember it clearly." He asked: "When a true friend does not wait for an invitation, like a mother rushing to her infant, what is it like?" The Master said: "Heaven nurtures with rain and dew; earth grows spiritual sprouts." "In that case, a single dot penetrates the great thousandfold world." The Master said: "The four seas are constantly overflowing; how could the five lakes be lacking?" He asked: "'Those who attain a human body are like the dirt on a fingernail; those who lose a human body are like the dirt of the great earth.' What is the meaning?" The Master said: "Real and not false." "What is this meaning?" The Master said: "In the crystal palace one observes the bright moon; atop the peak of the Great Mountain one sees auspicious clouds." He asked: "Today the late master has offerings in six places; I wonder which place the late master attends?" The Master said: "Attending the offerings, he has never left his original place; unfolding light, where does not receive favor?" "In that case, pecking from within and tapping from without happen simultaneously." The Master said: "Receiving offerings is in the right now." He asked: "When meeting like a needle cast \[into the sea\], what is it like?" The Master said: "What doubt is there of deep or shallow?" "In that case, upon meeting the eye the Way is present." The Master said: "Nāgārjuna shakes his golden staff; Āryadeva strikes the great bell." He asked: "I have long relied on the Dharma assembly; why does the Buddha Dharma not appear before me?" The Master said: "I congratulate you on your whole life." "In that case, it is entirely due to today." The Master said: "Not seeing the finest hair, how could it be the same as arising and ceasing?" He asked: "A person of great awakening—by what is it verified?" The Master said: "The mountains are high and the waters wide, which all people believe; the earth is enduring and heaven is long-lasting, which they naturally do not know." "After knowing, whom do you instruct to understand?" The Master said: "Shitou of Nanyue personally had a line; the Daoist of the northern prefecture cannot express it." "In that case, only a Buddha together with a Buddha can know it." The Master said: "Do not drag down this old monk." He asked: "Before Niutou had met the Fourth Patriarch, why did the hundred birds hold flowers in their beaks to offer him?" The Master said: "A new deity requires a shamaness's sacrifice." "After meeting him, why did they not hold flowers in their beaks to offer him?" The Master said: "The ancient temple again suffered the scribblings of poor scholars." He asked: "What is the intention of the ancestral master coming from the west?" The Master said: "The divine tortoise knows good and bad fortune before any omen; do not wait for the soaring serpent to move before becoming alarmed." He asked: "What is the family style of the ancient Buddhas?" The Master said: "One blow of the stick, one welt." "What is it ultimately?" The Master said: "Shattered into ten million pieces."
