> Now, the great beings who investigate the mystery are different from doctrinal scholars: they suddenly open the gate of the single nature and directly step forth onto the road of the ten thousand workings. Entering the groves and gardens of dhāraṇī, campaka flowers provide fragrance; fanning the auspicious plans of the ancient Buddhas, a clear mind is the Way. Harboring ice and frost, they are pure and white, true jade without blemish; holding metal and stone, they are steadfast and pure, the black dragon's pearl shining forth. Inheriting the orthodox lineage of Kāśyapa and transmitting the secret seal of Caoxi, for those who awaken within themselves, what matters seniority or youth? For those whose mystery is penetrated, how could worthiness or foolishness obstruct them? Thus monks and laypeople follow it alike, and both sages and worldlings converge in it. When the mind is clear, words offer instruction; when wisdom is penetrating, speech is sure to hit the mark. Understanding the ten thousand phenomena in a single word, cutting off the myriad streams across the four seas—when it is like this, what heaven is not bright, what earth is not level? Since there is the light of observation and seeing, how could there be no one capable of discerning? Nowadays, if one wishes to investigate this Way, one must immediately examine oneself like a lamp illuminating the dark room of many lifetimes; lofty and bright like the moon, shining upon the murky paths of accumulated kalpas. Cleanse the intention and clarify the spirit; forget the body for the sake of the Dharma. Learn the lion cub's roar—do not chase jackals; soar along with the phoenix's chick—cease following yellow sparrows. Take vigorous effort as your task, realizing that in many lifetimes one rarely encounters an extraordinary person; make valor your mind, rejoicing in this life to have met an intimate friend. One must open right view and urgently achieve mastery; high-minded wanderers beyond material things must not give rise to indolence. Faithful words grate on the ear and do not accord with human feelings; forthright speech is without bias—I earnestly hope you will examine and awaken to it.
