> Distinguished and lofty in bearing, / with crane-like eyebrows and raven-black hair, / I have traversed the mountain clouds, / and walked extensively along ocean paths. / Everywhere visiting ancestral masters, / I personally bowed and paid homage; / sometimes asking questions to match the dynamic, / sometimes brandishing the edge to provoke and lift; / sometimes walking the same path with the great assembly, / sometimes dwelling and resting in solitary conduct. / A single branch towering high atop a ten-thousand-year pine; / a solitary moon brightly suspended amid the forest of a thousand sages; / idling away time across the universe, / faltering along the Xiang River to conceal my clumsy nature. / Therefore, in the mountain crags, body and mind were settled, free and thoroughly at leisure; / seated in meditation on majestic peaks, the spirit grew still, and pure emptiness completely ceased. / Sometimes walking with a staff in circumambulation, / sometimes meeting someone and pointing out the key; / within the shadow of precious light, wishing to serve as a bright lamp; / within the case of jade scrolls, ever striking to awaken. / Soft as cotton, hard as iron, / a single piece of true mind is ever immaculate and pure; / unobstructed in every direction by the coming and going wind, / how could its functioning depend upon times and seasons? / The enclosure is vast and wide, free from bondage and restraint; / eating ordinary gruel and rice, and sipping tea; / when it is cold, resting in the hall by the brazier; / when it is hot, resting beneath the pines and green vines. / Leaving it to princes and marquises, following along with donors, / not fearing severe frost that cracks the frozen earth; / when the sky clears, the myriad images cannot conceal it; / after the rain, pushing aside the clouds, the sun and moon are revealed. / Rousing awesome spiritual power, freezing into frost and snow; / thunderbolt-sharp dynamic is like a flash of lightning; / speaking directly, not a single speck of dust is seen; / who would still use their mind to boast of skill or clumsiness? / If someone does not understand and asks what it is like, / tell them: it is just like knocking out a wedge with another wedge.
