> Instructing the assembly, he said, "'Reciting praises in the bell tower, planting vegetables under the bed'—what about such a time? Chan Master Sheng of Huangbo said, 'A fierce tiger sits across the road.'" (The \*Huiyuan\* states: When the prefecture invited an elder for Huangbo, the Master gave the cue: "'Reciting praises in the bell tower, planting vegetables under the bed'—if anyone can offer a word that accords, he may go and be the abbot." Head Monk Sheng said, "A fierce tiger sits across the road." The Master then ordered him to reside at Huangbo.) (All the above are from the \*Chanmen niansong ji\*.)
