> Ascending the hall, he cited: "A scholar came to meet Muzhou. Muzhou said, 'What do you understand?' The scholar said, 'I understand the calligraphy of the twenty-four masters.' Muzhou made a dot in the air with his staff and said, 'Do you understand?' The scholar was at a loss. Muzhou said, 'You claim to understand the calligraphy of the twenty-four masters, yet you do not even recognise the eight methods of the character yong.'" The Master said, "Muzhou's single dot was straight from before the King of Awesome Voice; yet when it came to discussing calligraphy with the eight methods, he was exposed by a worldly man. If it were Guizong, it would not be so: among the disciples of Confucius, no one recognises it; the blue-eyed barbarian monk smiles and nods." He descended from the seat.
