> Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Before Niutou met the Fourth Patriarch, why did the hundred birds hold flowers in their beaks to offer him?" The Master said, "A mulberry tree with pinned roots; a wide-horned water buffalo." The monk continued, "Why did they not hold flowers in their beaks to offer after he met him?" The Master said, "Short trousers without a crotch; trousers without an opening." The monk also asked, "How was it before meeting him?" The Master said, "In a peaceful state, the talented are valued; in a wealthy family, the young children are pampered." "How was it after meeting him?" The Master said, "Worldly sentiments look to warmth and cold; human faces follow high and low."
